TOUR DU MONT BLANC - 2007 - DAY 3JUNE 6 Today we have two options to continue our trek: the traditional route through the Fenetre de Arpette (2,665m/8,743ft) or a detour through Bovine (1,987m/6,519ft). With his small binoculars, Freddy checks the lower levels of the Glacier du Trient. He decides that it is too early in the season and the route covered with snow is not safe. We take the longer but easier route through Bovine. From the Col de Forclaz, the trail follows the east slopes of Bovine. We are the first party this year , as such the trail is in perfect condition.
The summit of Bovine offers a perfect spot for lunch.
After lunch we continue traversing the north slope of Bovine and see the Swiss town of Martigny down in the valley.
While crossing mountain stream, one has to be quick and have good balance. A helping hand is always welcomed.
Descending from the high meadows we encounter Rhododendrons in full bloom.
Champex (1,466m/4,810ft) is a traditional mountain village located on the shore of the picturesque Champex Lake. Hiking, swimming, cycling and boating are the main activities during the summer. Alpine and Nordic skiing are the sports in the winter. In the early spring, the village is very quiet. Wanda tries to buy some local cheese, but all the stores are closed.
Tonight we stay in the Relais d'Arpette located at the entrance to the Val d'Arpette.
Wanda and Freddy are definitely getting along quite well. Both of them share the same taste for good cheese and wine. This part of Switzerland is well known for both. It is now a routine for them to finish the dinner with a bottle of local wine and a platter of cheese. After several hours of walking and a filling meal like that, we can barely keep our eyes open past ten o'clock. Freddy tells us that next day, we have a relatively easy day before the big climb to the Col de Ferret. |
