MOUNT LOGAN 2001(Pictures by Freddie Grossniklaus-Swiss Guides)

This expedition is organized by International Mountain Guides. After a disappointment on Cho Oyu, I need a break. I am sure that since I was able to climb to 7,000 m on Cho Oyu, climbing a mountain more than 1,000 m lower will not be a problem. After a long drive from Anchorage, Alaska to Chitina, we are flown in a Canadian built Beaver to Ultima Thule lodge and later to the base camp at the bottom of King's Trench.

After setting at base camp, we move up the trench carrying heavy back packs and pulling plastic sleds.

In Camp 2 we have a fantastic view of the King's Peak and seracs on the headwall.

Our rapid progress up the mountain is abruptly stopped by a bad storm in Camp 4 at 5,550 m. When our food and fuel supplies are exhausted, we have to return back to the base camp.
