KILIMANJARO 2009 - DAY 3

 FEBRUARY 16

Our expedition starts today. The first part is a four day hike of Mount Meru (4,566m - 14,980ft) located 70 km (44 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro expedition starts today. The first part is a four-day hike of Mount Meru (4,566m - 14,980ft) located 70 km (44 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. This will be our acclimatization trip, which hopefully will increase our chances to climb Kilimanjaro. We pack our red bags into a mini bus and 45 minutes later arrive at the Momela Gate.

Living, our guide, welcomes us and introduces his young assistant Thomas and the porters.

At the gate, we collect our ranger Joseph. Joseph is dressed in military style clothes and carries a rifle. He is with us for protection against the stubborn buffalos. It's time to go. Before long, we stop to watch baboons picking at ants or termites.

In the middle of the climb, we stop for lunch and watch our porters carrying heavy loads on their heads.

After lunch, hiking is more difficult as the trail rises before our goal for today - The Miriakamba Hut.

After four hours of hiking, we arrive at the huts and eat our dinner while watching a lonely giraffe munching on some climbing vines just on the other side of the camp fence.
