KILIMANJARO 2009 - DAY 1

 FEBRUARY 14

Arumeru River Lodge is a tropical oasis full of plants, flowers and animals. Norbert, the owner, has converted an old coffee plantation into a luxury resort.

After a scrumptious buffet-style breakfast, we have a chance to stroll through the gardens full of exotic plants and flowers.

Built out of predominantly local materials and utilizing solar energy for heating, the lodge is as "green" as possible without sacrificing the comfort of the guests.  It is an enchanted place and we wish we could stay here longer.

Norbert tells the story of the Arumeru River Lodge

In the afternoon we have to transfer to Moivaro Lodge. This lodge is much older and shows its age. It is also located on the old coffee plantation. The landscaping was originally very beautiful, but currently shows signs of neglect. The plumbing system in our cottage leaks and the lighting system needs to be reset every evening by the staff. The buffet style meals are not very appetizing and the barbecued food is overcooked and therefore very tough.

Mount Meru, our first target is clearly visible from the lodge.

A friendly waiter at Moivaro Lodge entertains us with the welcoming song - Jumbo Bwana
